Dear EnviroSensors,

Our speaker scheduled for October had to cancel and so Scotty and I have decided to cancel the October EnviroSensing telecon. We plan to resume our speaker series in November. If you or anyone you know is interested in giving a ~30 min presentation in one of our upcoming telecons, please reach out to Scotty and me with your idea. We had a great showing for Brad Lyles’ presentation last month on the soil water potential sensing work he is doing at the Desert Research Institute.

In other ESIP News, the deadline to apply for the 2021 ESIP Community Fellows Program is 10/9. The EnviroSensing Cluster is seeking a Fellow to help us out with Cluster activities. If you are a student or new post-doc, or if you know of great candidates, please have them apply and let us know. More information about this excellent opportunity is below.

Secondly, the call for sessions at the 2021 virtual ESIP Winter Meeting is open (deadline 11/5; more info below). If you are interested in organizing a session with an EnviroSensing theme, please let us know. We also intend to push forward with plans to offer a virtual tutorial or short workshop on low-cost open-source sensor technologies.

Call for Applications for the 2021 Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) Community Fellows Program
ESIP<https://www.esipfed.org/> Community Fellows are graduate students and post-docs (<2 yrs since graduation) interested in bridging the gap between informatics and Earth Science. This fellowship provides fellows with a chance to work closely with professionals in an interdisciplinary, cross-sector group (ESIP collaboration area<https://www.esipfed.org/get-involved/collaborate>) on current Earth Science problems. Community fellows become engaged in ESIP collaboration areas as rapporteurs, documenting group activities on monthly telecons and at ESIP’s semi-annual meetings. As fellows become more familiar with collaboration-area activities, they may choose to integrate their own research, which can result in publication and additional funding opportunities.

Fellows receive a stipend of $2000. They also receive support to attend the 2021 ESIP Winter (January 2021, Virtual) and Summer (July 2021, TBD) Meetings, both of which bring together the most innovative thinkers and leaders around Earth observation data, thus forming a community dedicated to making Earth observations more discoverable, accessible and useful to researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and the public.

Fellows must be able to attend both meetings to participate in the fellowship, as well as be able to work legally in the US. You can learn about the 2020 Class of Community Fellows here<https://www.esipfed.org/collaboration-updates/welcome-2020-community-fellows>. Learn more about the opportunity and apply by 10/9 here<https://www.esipfed.org/get-involved/student-opportunities>.

2021 ESIP Winter Meeting: Call for Sessions OPEN NOW through 11/5!
The session proposal portal for the 2021 Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) Winter Meeting<https://2021esipwintermeeting.sched.com/info> (January 26th-28th, 2021; Online) is open now through 11/5. For over 20 years, ESIP meetings have brought together the most innovative thinkers and leaders around Earth observation data, thus forming a community dedicated to making Earth observations more discoverable, accessible and useful to researchers, practitioners, policy makers, and the public. See, for example, topics and speakers from the 2020 ESIP Summer Meeting<https://2020esipsummermeeting.sched.com/>.

We especially welcome session proposals related to the meeting theme: Leading Innovation in Earth Science Data Frontiers. Sessions are 90 minute blocks and can follow a number of different formats.

Learn more and submit a session proposal by 11/5 here<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1TXVHqig7AgfGSblTR-6Qxprc-6ctbAUU4VvYpoJVszM/edit?usp=sharing>.

Are you interested in presenting a poster or recorded demo in the Research Showcase at the Winter Meeting? You can also now propose to do so here<https://forms.gle/5fLDuhsQmwzigkeh7>. This event was a big success at the virtual 2020 ESIP Summer Meeting, providing opportunities for attendees to interact with content throughout the event as well as to meet with presenters live. This option can be a great alternative to proposing a session or a great complement to one!
