Donating In-kind Items (including furniture and appliances) and Buying
Re-sale Items 

This list gives organizations and stores that accept unwanted items and new
basic necessities and includes a brief description of the groups¹ missions.
The following information can be useful for anyone searching for places to
contribute unwanted things, are preparing to move, after gift giving
occasions and following yard sales.

It may be possible to receive a tax deduction for your in-kind donations.

The non-profit organizations in Durham that want in-kind contributions and
their especially requested donations are:

Pennies for Change 1826 Chapel Hill Rd.  489-2681
Re-sale store run by the Durham Crisis Response Center.  The shop also
donates items to victims of domestic & sexual violence services.
Cell phones in working condition, linens, dishes, house wares, electronics,
small furniture, CDs, art, lamps, paper products and clothes.
Tuesday through Saturday 10 AM ­ 5 PM.

Drug and alcohol residential rehab center.
Computers w/ Pentium 3 or more, monitors 17² or more, furniture and
appliances in good condition, household items, mattresses and clothes.  Call

Homeless shelter and service organization for families.
Household cleaning items, linens, personal hygiene items, kitchen utensils,
cookware, larger appliances, mattresses, children¹s books (new and gently
used,) and educational games and toys. NO CLOTHING.  Call first to be sure
they can use what you would like to donate.

Transitional housing with 3 separate houses for homeless single men & women.
Blankets, clothes (especially underclothes, linguierese, extra large thermal
wear, gowns,) towels, washing detergent, toiletries, clothes hampers and
sometimes mattresses.  Call first to be sure they can use what you would
like to donate. Pick up service available.

Provides shelter, food, clothing, and supportive services to homeless,
hungry, and other people in need. Operates Community Shelter (with recovery
program for homeless people with addiction illnesses,) Community Kitchen,
Community Pantry and Community Closet.
Towels, personal hygiene products, blankets, folding and/or stacking chairs,
non-perishable food. Quality used home and office furniture can be donated
on behalf of Urban Ministries through New Beginnings Furniture (see above)

Offers low cost spay and neutering services to central North Carolina.

*New Beginnings Furniture, 301 S. Duke St. 682-1495  Sells home and office
furniture on behalf of non-profit groups. If you have furniture in good
condition you would like to donate New Beginnings can give you a tax credit
and then you can name the non-profit you want to benefit. New Beginnings
sells the furniture on behalf of that non-profit (some groups we work with
are TROSA, Urban Ministries, Durham Crisis Response, Threshold, Club Nova,
Interfaith Hospitality, Housing for New Hope...... etc. - call for a
complete list). The group will receive 50% of the sale and the balance is
used to pay our expenses.  Durham Congregations in Action (DCIA) has a
program that helps local hurricane victims by donating and selling them
needed items. Call Jeanette Parrish from TROSA at 419-1059 if know of
individuals that need donations from the Department of Social Services.
 
**SEEDS (South Eastern Efforts Developing Sustainable Spaces, Inc.¹s)
mission is to help neighborhoods and communities create sustainable green
spaces for gardening, gathering and education.
