INC NEWS - City to Temporarily Close Transfer Station for Renovations

No idea what this is about, but wouldn't it had made better sense to do
this work this coming weekend and on Monday (a holiday)? There will be no
solid waste services on those days anyway (except that of citizens on Sat.
who would haul some stuff there).

You may not know this, but there are other alternatives than hauling your
stuff to the transfer station. Because we live in Durham County, you can
go down to the County offices and get a permit to drop off stuff at any of
the container sites located throughout the County. I believe this sticker
costs $5 for a year. This sure beats the per ton charges at either Waste
Industries or the City Transfer station. If you're hauling it anyway, you
might as well make it as cheap as you can for disposal fees!

No Service Interruptions Will Be Experienced for Curbside Customers

Durham, N.C. - The City of Durham’s Department of Solid Waste Management
will temporarily close the Waste Disposal and Recycling Center (Transfer
Station), located at 2115 E. Club Boulevard, to all vehicles except those
operated by the City to complete renovations at the Scale House.

The Waste Disposal and Recycling Center will be closed from Thursday,
November 16 through Saturday, November 18, 2006.  It will reopen under its
normal schedule on Monday, November 20.  Regular curbside collection
services, including solid waste, yard waste and commercial dumpsters, will
not be interrupted for either citizens or businesses served by the City.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this brief closure will cause for our
citizens and businesses who wish to bring their debris to the Transfer
Station,” said Donald Long, director of the City’s Department of Solid
Waste Management.  “We explored several options to avoid closure,
including setting up a temporary work station.  After carefully
considering all factors, closure is the most fiscally responsible option
to complete the required construction in a timely manner and avoid long
lines of waste vehicles trying to access the Transfer Station.
Ultimately, these much-needed renovations will allow us to serve our
customers more efficiently and effectively.”

Durham citizens and businesses needing to drop off waste and debris that
is not normally collected at curbside during this three-day time period
may wish to visit the following location:

·         Waste Industries Transfer Station

148 Stone Park Court

Durham, N.C. 27703

Phone:  (919) 596-1363, extension 125

Waste Industries is open Monday – Friday from 7 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.  Waste
Industries accepts checks and credit cards (except American Express), but
does not accept cash.  The fee is $39.50 per ton, the same rate as the
City.  They do not accept yard waste, white goods, tires or full loads of
cardboard.
