Peace Toys for War Toys Exchange

The 2006 holiday season is quickly approaching, and that means it is time
for the 3rd Annual Durham Peace Toys for War Toys Exchange! Thursday,
December 14 at 6:00 pm, The North Carolinians Against Gun Violence Education
Fund, Calvary Ministries of the Westend Community and Project Safe
Neighborhoods invite parents to bring their preschool and elementary school
children to the Community Family Life and Recreation Center at Lyon Park to
exchange their old "war toys" for brand-new "peace toys." War toys are any
type of violent toy, from killer robots and toy guns to violent video games.
Peace toys are those that encourage challenging and creative, nonviolent
activities.

Project Safe Neighborhoods is currently collecting new, unwrapped,
NONVIOLENT toys for the event. To donate, drop off your toy in the
collection barrel in the lobby of Police Headquarters at 505 W. Chapel Hill
Street by Noon on Thursday, Dec. 14. Toys not distributed at the event will
be given to needy children by Durham police officers and staff.

The Durham Peace Toys for War Toys Exchange is a chance for the community to
demonstrate that violence is not child's play. The event also serves as a
community reminder of the staggering number of persons who have lost their
lives to or been injured by gun violence. This event is supported by
community organizations, local businesses, religious congregations,
neighborhood associations, local law enforcement and elected officials.

Community volunteers and local law enforcement officers will help with the
event, which will include refreshments and entertainment. We are happy that
this has become an annual event in Durham!

How You Can Participate Donate a toy, and then join us for the Toy Exchange
on Dec. 14th! This will be a fun event for both parents and kids! We will
have musical entertainment, a dance performance, pizza and more!
