The best of my education has come from the public library... my tuition
fee is a bus fare and once in a while, five cents a day for an overdue
book. You don't need to know very much to start with, if you know the
way to the public library. --Lesley Conger

DURHAM COUNTY MAIN LIBRARY HOSTS CHILDREN'S BOOK AUTHORS

DURHAM-Durham County Main Library will host Meet the Author events in
December, January and February to encourage informal conversations
between children's book authors and their readers. Saturday, Dec. 16,
from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., "The North Carolina Alphabet" creators, Pamela
George and Walter Brown, will discuss their book and the amazing
alphabet mural that is on display on the first floor of the Main
Library. Robert Merriam, author of The Mystery of Blackbeard's
Treasure" will greet readers from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan.
27. "Where's Leon?" author Jody Cassell is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 1
p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24. All of the authors will have books for sale and
will be signing their books. The Main Library is at 300 N. Roxboro St.
in downtown Durham.

"The North Carolina Alphabet," published by Carolina Wren Press, was
featured in the September 2006 issue of Our State magazine. The
development of the alphabet was a collaborative effort between the
creators-George and Brown-and teachers, professors and students around
the state. The illustration for each letter features calligraphy and a
native plant or animal or a North Carolina landscape. The original set
of canvases hangs together in a large mural, which is wonderfully
textural and full of vibrant colors. The mural will remain on display
on the first floor of the Main Library through the end of the year.

The co-creators of the mural and book met as colleagues at the North
Carolina Central University (NCCU) School of Education. George, the
illustrator, is a retired professor of educational psychology. She owns
the P'Gale Fine Art Studio in Durham. In addition to the alphabet,
George has illustrated a dozen books, produced seven documentary films
and has exhibited her art in numerous group and solo exhibitions. She
earned her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Brown, who hand-lettered the alphabet, is a professor emeritus and
former dean of the School of Education at NCCU. He is a member of the
Carolina Lettering Arts Society and the Triangle Calligraphers' Guild
and has taught calligraphy in a number of settings, including NCCU,
Durham Technical Community College and the Durham Arts Council. Brown
earned his Ph.D. from NCCU.

Merriam, who wrote "The Mystery of Blackbeard's Treasure," said that he
drew on his own life experiences in writing his first novel. He has
knowledge of soldiering, mountaineering, conducting research and
teaching at a university. In addition, he remembers his own childhood
with much pleasure and loves curious and active kids. He begins his
book with two children who are bored out of their minds on a rainy day
and end up finding directions to buried treasure in an attic trunk.

"Where's Leon?" is a picture book that also explores creative movement
and builds emergent literacy skills. Cassell, the author, and
illustrator Kyra Kristof Pincheira have turned a favorite childhood
game-hide and seek-into a rich learning experience.
