Durham History Museum Public Survey Now Available
Citizen Input Requested By Feb. 26 Deadline

Durham, N.C. – Durham residents who want to have
input about the proposed Durham History Museum,
but were unable to attend the January 31st
community meetings, can still do so via an online Web survey.

Representatives from Riggs Ward Design, the
consulting group conducting the Durham History
Museum Planning Study, have created a Web site
with a public questionnaire concerning the
proposed museum. Interested stakeholders,
artists, design professionals and Durham
residents are invited to complete the
questionnaire at
<http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=WskUvsbAaq_2f9m11ULjrlew_3d_3d>www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=WskUvsbAaq_2f9m11ULjrlew_3d_3d.
The deadline for input to be received is February 26, 2008.

Survey questions will solicit ideas on such
things as the location, focus, size, potential
collections and funding sources as well as other
aspects, including the proposed museum’s
relationship to existing heritage sites in Durham
County. In addition, the consultants have
created a blog site to help further encourage
discussion of both the project and Durham’s
history at
<http://durhamhistorymuseum.blogspot.com/>http://durhamhistorymuseum.blogspot.com.

According to Peter Coyle, cultural master plan
project manager with the City of Durham’s Office
of Economic and Workforce Development, the lack
of a history museum is a major oversight for
Durham. “Durham is the largest city in the state
that does not have a local history museum,” Coyle
said. “With a rich history that extends back to
pre-Revolutionary War days, through the Civil
War, the rise of the textile and tobacco
industries, the growth of two great universities,
Durham’s role as a center for African-American
business institutions, the civil rights movement,
medical and pharmaceutical innovations and
discoveries, and a rich cultural and sports
history, there is a need to tell this important story.”

According to Coyle, the consultants will compile
information from the January community meetings,
online surveys, additional stakeholder interviews
and public meetings, leading to an initial survey
response report in early March. The process will
then continue through May, with additional
opportunities for public input, leading to a
final report in early June. For more information
about this project, contact Coyle at (919)

The Durham History Museum Planning Project is a
cooperative project of the Durham Cultural Master
Plan Advisory Board, Preservation Durham and the
Parrish Street Advocacy Group and is funded by
the Cultural Master Plan, a joint project of the
City and County of Durham. To learn more about
