Durham Fire Department Reminds Citizens To Change Smoke Alarm Batteries
This Weekend

Durham, N.C. - With clocks ready to "spring forward" this weekend, the
City of Durham Fire Department (DFD) is reminding citizens to change
their smoke alarm batteries as well to ensure this valuable, early
warning system works properly in the event of a fire.

According to the DFD and the National Fire Protection Association
(NFPA), properly installed and maintained smoke alarms can reduce the
risk of death by nearly 50 percent. Tips to ensure smoke alarms work
properly include:

* Change the batteries every six months.

*         Test the alarm monthly.

* Place smoke alarms near bedrooms on every floor, including the
basement.

* Regularly vacuum or dust the smoke alarm to keep it working
properly.

* Replace the smoke alarm after 10 years with a new alarm.

For additional information on smoke alarms or to obtain a free alarm
courtesy of the DFD, contact Angelica Stroud, community relations
coordinator and public information officer for the DFD, at (919)
560-4233, extension 242 or via e-mail at Angelica.Stroud at durhamnc.gov.
