City to Discuss Designs for Four Neighborhood Commercial Districts

Durham, N.C. - The City of Durham’s Office of Economic and Workforce
Development (OEWD) and the Department of Public Works are hosting
neighborhood meetings to begin the planning process for new streetscape
designs in four neighborhood commercial areas.

The project, funded by 2005 bond funds, will address streetscape designs
for Fayetteville Street between N.C. 147 and Homeland Avenue, East Main
Street between Hood and Alston Streets, the intersection of Angier Avenue
and Driver Street, and the intersection of North Mangum and Corporation
Streets.

The City will team with consultants from EG&G, Inc. to develop a schematic
design for the projects.  Residents, businesses and other stakeholders in
each streetscape project area are invited to attend the upcoming meetings
to learn more about the projects, provide input and engage in
opportunities to help determine the streetscape design.  “Our goal is to
create streetscape designs for these key commercial districts,” said Chris
Dickey, economic development administrator with the City’s OEWD.  “A major
component will be the input of local residents, businesses, developers and
other stakeholders.  Through these community meetings, we will determine
how each corridor can be improved as it relates to aesthetics, safety and
functionality.”

The first meeting regarding the Fayetteville Street project will be on
Monday, April 7 at the Hayti Heritage Center, 804 Old Fayetteville Street,
from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  The second meeting will be on Tuesday, April 8
at the Refiner Fire Community Church, 1003 East Main Street, from 6 p.m.
to 7:30 p.m. to discuss the East Main Street project.  The third meeting
will be on Thursday, April 17, at the UDI Community Resource Center, 800
North Mangum Street, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. to discuss the North Mangum
and Corporation Street project.
