 Portastatic

INDIE ROCK

Sunday, 6/22/08, 7 pm

Outdoors at Duke Gardens

Portastatic’s sweet, sad, anthemic music ought to sound
gorgeous in the Gardens at twilight.  The band – in this
iteration, a quartet – is a project of Mac McCaughan, who,
more than two decades ago helped launch indie rock pacesetter
Superchunk.  Since 1992, Portastatic has put out 10 acclaimed
albums on Merge Records – the world-beater label that Mac
helps run out of “a fine old building” in downtown
Durham.

Bowerbirds

FOREST FOLK

Sunday, 6/29/08, 7 pm

Outdoors at Duke Gardens

The Gardens promises to be a fine setting for a concert featuring
the Bowerbirds and their enchanting ramshackle tunes – music
that blends earthy forest-wrought folk with lush seascape
vocals.  The online indie trendsetter Pitchfork wrote
this in praise of them: “[Bowerbirds] manage to be both
hypnotically pretty and a little bit weird – characteristics
of the very best kind of Americana music.”

SACRED STEEL

Sunday, 7/6/08, 7 pm

Outdoors at Duke Gardens

The Mt. Airy-based sacred steel unit, the Allen Boys –
fronted by the dazzling pedal steel player DaShawn Hickman –
were brought up in the Pentecostal House of God church.  In
this predominantly African-American congregation – made known
widely by the music of the Campbell Brothers and Robert Randolph
– the incisive pedal steel guitar accompanies the whole of
the service.  Of late, the Allen Boys have gained a good
measure of justified acclaim by delivering their jubilant music to
a grateful outside-the-church audience.

Les Savy Fav

POST PUNK

Saturday, 7/12/08, 8 pm

Outdoors at the Nasher Museum of Art

In 1995 a quartet of kids attending RISD (Rhode Island School of
Design) formed Les Savy Fav.  The band has, in the intervening
13 years, become an icon of post punk – they are celebrated
for outrageous hyper-kinetic shows and what The New York
Times describes as “up-beat, jaunty rock, deliberately
curdled with dissonant guitar lines, and critiques of
capitalism.”

In 2007, after a six-year hiatus from recording, precipitated by a
prolonged case of writers block, the band put out Let’s
Stay Friends.  The new album garnered high praise, a
spate of sold-out big venue shows, dates at top festivals, and a
slot on Late Night with Conan O’Brien.  For
their first area appearance in over four years, Les Savy Fav will
perform outside at the Nasher in what promises to be one of the
more memorable music events of the summer.
