GOOD MUSIC IS HAPPENING IN DURHAM!

This week on Thursday and Saturday evenings, join Durham Parks and
Recreation for free music on the CCB Plaza (corner of Corcoran and
Parrish Streets in downtown Durham). This week features indie rock and
jazz.

Dom Casual and Shipwrecker
Thursday, June 26, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Indie rock

Dom Casual is a Durham-based band that incorporates the best aspects of
the last 50 years of rock into a modern sound that name checks everyone
from Ritchie Valens to Luna. The newest release, "Espanta Muerto,"
continues their 11-year journey, evoking 60's Britpop, teen idols,
spaghetti-western soundtracks, surf-punk and indie rock. The band has
been compared to the Kinks, Modern Lovers, and the Clash, and their
covers span a wide range, including the west-coast psych darlings, Love,
to the punk pioneers, The Ramones.

Durham's own five-piece Shipwrecker harnesses the brute force of
ukulele, lap steel, banjo, bass, and drums and wields them mercilessly
in what trianglerock.com calls a "deranged nautical hoedown." Stomping,
plodding, shouting, occasionally soaring, their dark Americana music
dwells long and loud on empty bottles, violent seas, and vengeful gods.
The Raleigh Hatchet calls Shipwrecker's four-song debut EP "enjoyable,
with weird and amazingly catchy songs about lawns and grog - possibly
the most fun, unpretentious record of the year. Or ever."

Stanley Baird

Saturday, June 28, 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.
Jazz

Stanley Baird, an acclaimed musician, composer and entertainer, has not
only become a household name in his home state of North Carolina but has
also achieved wide recognition as an educator at both the public and
university level. During his teaching tenure in St. Croix of the U.S.
Virgin Islands, Baird was able to quench his thirst for West Indian and
Latin music. This influence is heard throughout his music. Stanley
created the Stanley Baird Youth Jazz Foundation because he believes jazz
can be kept alive through young rising instrumentalists and vocalists.
