department will be focusing its efforts in the months to come. Some of
the most significant statistics for June include an increase in the
number of murders, rapes, burglaries, and larcenies compared to May.

Two Greenway and Trail Projects Receive More Funding As They Near
Completion

* The City Council approved increasing funding for the Third Fork
Creek Trail and the Eno River Greenway projects. The total cost of the
Third Fork Creek Trail project was increased by $402,590 to cover the
extraordinary increases in construction costs over the past few months.
The project includes a trail between Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and
Woodcroft Parkway. It will complete the longest section of the
North-South Greenway Trail that was approved as part of the 1996 Park
General Obligation Bonds. The total project budget for the Eno River
Greenway project was also increased by $92,151. The money will go
toward paving a 500-foot section of trail that will help to connect West
Point on the Eno Park with the River Forest Park. It will also fund a
stone veneer for part of the new pedestrian bridge across the Eno River.

Preliminary Design Work for South Roxboro Street Extension Project Ready
to Begin

* The preliminary design work for the South Roxboro Street Extension
project is about to get underway. The project calls for South Roxboro
Street to be extended approximately one mile from Martin Luther King Jr.
Parkway north to Cornwallis Road. The City Council approved a $433,130
design contract that will involve a public process to select the new
cross section and roadway alignment. An environmental assessment of the
area that will be affected by the extension will also be part of this
phase of the project. The extension project is expected to increase
