Christmas trees

My personal preference for a Christmas tree is to get a real tree. (I have
problems with having a tree grow for years and than cutting them down to
only be used as a Christmas tree for a few weeks.) You may want to call
ahead to see if the nursery or plant store have the pine tree you are
looking for.) A caution and that is that I recommend asking a staff person
if the trees will do well in our growing zone and by that I mean does not
need a colder climate.

Cut and live Christmas trees take maintenance and care. I am very concerned
about house fires. Therefore I recommend that trees are kept watered to
minimize the fire hazard, especially if you purchased a tree early during
the holiday season. Also if you buy a live tree I recommend keeping it
inside the house for no more than a week or two. Having a live tree inside
the house for a short period of time will also help it survive in the ground
because it will less likely to have become acclimatized to the warmth of a
house.

Toxic Free NC (formerly known as PESTed) can help you get ready for the
holidays with their annual guide to buying Christmas trees and wreaths
sustainably grown in North Carolina. Toxic Free NC compiled a list of
sources, as well as some links for more information on Christmas trees,
pesticides and farmworkers in NC. ³Your purchase of a tree or wreath grown
locally without pesticides makes a difference in more ways than
one - you'll be protecting your family from pesticide residues, protecting
Christmas tree workers and their families, and supporting local growers who
respect their workers and our environment.²
