Durham, N.C. – It is that time again. Annual taxes are due by January 5,
2009. As the deadline for tax payment quickly approaches, Durham County’s
Tax Administration Department encourages citizens to pay taxes on time to
avoid interest and long payment lines.

Here are some ideas to beat the year-end rush to pay taxes:

Pay taxes early to avoid long lines. Year-end lines to pay taxes usually
start in mid-December and most of the month of January. Revenue agents
are more accessible to answer questions and able to assist citizens prior
to the tax-payment rush.

Have all relevant documents regarding bill payment upon arrival. To
ensure that the Tax Administration Department answers all questions and
bills are declared paid in full; bring all property and vehicle tax bills
to the office for payment. To retrieve any missing bills, visit the Tax
Administration website. Citizens should be prepared to pay all blocked
vehicle tax bills with cash.

Check, credit or debit card are options for payment when using the Tax
Administration’s on-line E-services.

Conveniently located tax-payment kiosks are a great alternative to making
tax payments in person. Kiosks are located in the Tax Administration
Office, located at 200 East Main Street, Durham, NC 27701, and outside the
Department of Motor Vehicles’ Office at Northgate Mall. Citizens should
be prepared to pay a processing fee associated with the credit/debit card
option.

Payments made by check can be deposited in the drop box located in the Tax
Administration Office, across from the cashier’s desk. Citizens that do
not need to wait for a receipt at the point of payment, should deposit
payments in the drop box. Only payments made by check are acceptable in
the drop box. Credit for payment is given on the same business day that
the check is dropped off.

Place payments in the mail to avoid long payment lines. Once payments are
received via snail mail, they are processed within two business days.
Payments should be mailed to:
Durham County Tax Administration

P.O. Box 3397
Durham NC 27702
