Durham Gears Up for Construction on Stimulus-Funded Projects

All Three Projects Begin May 3; Some Trail Closures Planned and Minor
Street Traffic Delays Expected

DURHAM, N.C. - Beginning Monday, May 3, 2010, residents will note
construction on portions of Ellerbe Creek Trail and the American Tobacco
Trail, as well as street and sidewalk construction and repair on
multiple streets throughout Durham.

To begin repairs and resurfacing, the portion of the Ellerbe Creek Trail
between West Lavender Avenue and West Murray Avenue will be closed
effective May 3, along with the entry road to the Northgate Dog Park,
since 200 feet of the trail also serves as the park entry. The
Northgate Dog Park will be closed for up to two weeks at some point
during the 90-day construction timeframe as repairs are made to the
entry.

Work on portions of the American Tobacco Trail will also begin May 3,
with repairs being made from Morehead Avenue to Southpoint Crossings as
well as the Riddle Road section of the trail. Closures on these
portions of the trail will be ongoing throughout the 90-day construction
timeframe as the City's contractor moves around to complete repairs and
resurfacing work.

Both trail projects, funded by the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act
(ARRA), will cost $297,550. More information about these trail projects
can be found at www.durhamnc.gov/departments/works/project_ST-246.cfm.

Another project kicking off on May 3 is the repair and installation of
sidewalk and curb-cut ramps to portions of Dearborn Drive, Hillandale
Road, Hillsborough Road, Markham Avenue, Hope Valley Road, Washington
Street, and University Drive. The project will begin with the
Hillsborough Road portion and is expected to take up to three months to
complete. Vehicle and pedestrian traffic will be maintained throughout
the project, but minor delays can be expected. This project was also
funded by ARRA and will cost $504,328. More information can be found at
www.durhamnc.gov/departments/works/project_SW-25.cfm.

The final project beginning on May 3 is the reconfiguration of the
intersection of Miami Boulevard at Geer Street. This project will last
up to 60 days with vehicle and pedestrian traffic being maintained
throughout the project. Flaggers with be used to direct traffic and
motorists should expect minor delays. This project, also funded by the
ARRA, will cost $69,864. More information can be found at
www.durhamnc.gov/departments/works/project_ST-247.cfm.

Any questions about any of these ARRA projects may also be directed to
Tim Jackson, civil engineer with the City's Department of Public Works,
