Durham Hosts W. Ellerbee Creek Greenway Workshop May 12
Participants Asked to Give Design Input on Future Guess Road Trail
Crossing
What: West Ellerbee Creek Greenway Phase II Citizen
Workshop
Who: City of Durham Department of General Services and
Durham Parks & Recreation
When: Wednesday, May 12, 2010, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Where: Friendly City Civitan Club at Northgate Park
2510 Glendale Avenue
Durham, N.C. 27704
Fast Facts:
* Design of phase II of the West Ellerbee Creek Greenway is
underway and citizen input, particularly residents from the
Watts-Hillandale community, is sought for in an interactive design
workshop next week.
* Participants will be briefed on the status of the project,
which is currently only funded for design and is targeted for completion
in late 2010, and then asked to participate in a group design exercise
to help development recommendations for how the existing trail will
extend from Westover Park at the end of West Ellerbee Creek Phase I to
cross I-85, North Pointe Drive and then connect to the existing sidewalk
on Broad Street.
* Neighborhood input is sought for preference on the four
alternatives for crossing Guess Road, which include at-grade, pedestrian
activated signal at Wagoner Street and Guess Road; at-grade, pedestrian
activated signal mid-block on Guess Road; a pedestrian culvert under
Guess Road; or a pedestrian bridge over Guess Road. Regardless of the
option preferred above, all would require some level of tree removal in
Westover Park.
* This project has been coordinated with the designers and
engineers involved in the West Ellerbee Creek Stream Restoration Project
to understand the limits and phasing of each project. The conservation
easement for the stream restoration project was determined to allow for
Phase II of this trail when funding is allocated for the construction
portion of the project at a future time.

Prosperi, landscape architect with the City's Department of General
Services, at (919) 560-4197, ext. 21253, via e-mail at
