*GREAT NEWS!*

Preservation Durham and the Historic Preservation Office of the North
Carolina Department of Cultural Resources are pleased to announce that the
Stokesdale Historic District was entered in the National Register of
Historic Places on December 28, 2010. The National Register has been called
"a roll call of the tangible reminders of the history of the United
States." It is, therefore, a pleasure for the Department of Cultural
Resources to participate in this program and thereby make our nation aware
of North Carolina's rich cultural heritage.

The Stokesdale Historic District centers on Durham’s largest historic
African American community, and it stands as the only intact historic
neighborhood that remains of Hayti, the black “city within a city” in
Durham. The residential historic district is located south of downtown
Durham and is roughly bound by Umstead, Lincoln, Lawson, and Concord
Streets.

Listing in the National Register gives recognition that the properties have
historic, architectural, or archaeological significance within the context
of the community, state, or nation. Benefits include limited protection
against adverse action by state and federal agencies and eligibility for
federal and state tax benefits for the rehabilitation of depreciable
historic buildings. Also, a state tax credit of thirty percent of the cost
of qualifying rehabilitations offers aid to owners of houses and other
non-income-producing buildings.

If you have any questions about the district nomination or the National
Register listing, please contact Ann V. Swallow, National Register
Coordinator, North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources, 919-807-6587
or at ann.swallow at ncdcr.gov
