New "City Hall This Week" Begins Friday

New Episode Begins Airing Friday, February 11 on DTV8; 

All Previous Episodes "On Demand" on the City's DTV8 Website

 

DURHAM, N.C. - The following highlights from the February 7, 2011 Durham
City Council meeting and other topics of interest will be featured in
the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."  The show will begin
airing on Friday, February 11 at 8 p.m. on DTV8 and will also be
available to watch on demand at 
www.DurhamNC.gov/DTV8/CityHallThisWeek.cfm. 

 

New Management Company Approved for Durham Convention Center

The Durham Convention Center has a new management company. During a
joint special meeting, the City Council and County Commissioners
approved a five-year contract with Global Spectrum. The company will
take over operation of the City and County-owned facility from Shaner
Hotel Group Properties. Under the agreement, Global Spectrum will be
paid a $48,000 management consulting fee while the facility is closed
for construction through the end of June. After that point, the first
year of the agreement will include a flat management fee of $100,000,
plus increases through incentives.

 

Second Phase of Residential Water Meter Replacement Project Set to Get
Under Way

The second phase of the City's water meter replacement project is
expanding to homes located on the west side of Durham. The City Council
approved a $5,165,266 contract to upgrade more than 20,000 manual-read
residential water meters with remote-read water meters. Installation of
the new meters is expected to begin in April. Automated Meter Reading
Project Coordinator Aaron Blankenship with the City's Water Management
Department explains how the remote-read meters work and why they're
expected to benefit both the City and residents on the upcoming episode
of "City Hall This Week."

 

Significant Improvements on Several City-owned Buildings Move Forward

The City Council approved a $57,500 contract for preconstruction
services for the second phase of improvements to the Durham Arts Council
and Carolina Theatre. It also approved an $11,500 contract for
preconstruction services for improvements to the exterior and roof of
City Hall. The improvements to the Durham Arts Council and Carolina
Theatre include Americans with Disabilities upgrades, lighting repairs
and upgrades, and the replacement of sound and video systems.

 

City Continues Commitment to Helping Provide More Affordable Housing in
Durham

The City Council approved the use of $250,000 in federal housing funds
by Habitat for Humanity. The money will be used to buy or demolish a
minimum of eight properties located on Gunter Street, Moreland Avenue,
Rosedale Avenue, and Kent Street. Those properties are all located in
Southwest Central and Northeast Central Durham. They will be developed
with new energy-efficient homes and sold to first-time homebuyers.

residents about what is going on inside Durham's City Hall. Each edition
is taped on the first and third Tuesday of the month - the day after
