Durham Hosts Human Relations Awards Ceremony Feb. 24

DURHAM, N.C. - Next week, the City of Durham will pause to recognize two area leaders for their commitments to improving human relations among the people of Durham.

The City's Human Relations Commission and Human Relations Department are hosting the 2011 Human Relations Award Ceremony on Thursday, February 24, 2011, at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers of City Hall, located at 101 City Hall Plaza, Durham. The ceremony will also be televised live on DTV8 (Time Warner Cable channel 8) as well as web streamed on the City's website at www.DurhamNC.gov/DTV8 <http://www.DurhamNC.gov/DTV8/> .

The theme for this event is "Celebrating Our Diversity" and the ceremony is being held in honor of Human Relations Month. Dr. Phail Wynn, vice president for Durham and Regional Affairs at Duke University, will serve as the keynote speaker for the ceremony.

This event will recognize two individuals for their work in the Durham community. The recipient of the 2011 Human Relations Chairman's Award is Andrea Bazán, president of the Triangle Community Foundation. This award is presented to leaders and corporations in Durham, who with their skills, influence, and dedication, distinguish themselves through their professional achievements and their commitment to good works. Recently, President Barack Obama announced Bazán's appointment to the president's advisory council on faith-based and neighborhood partnerships. This council brings together religious leaders, scholars, and other experts to recommend ways to improve partnerships between government and private groups.

The recipient of the 2011 Human Relation Housing Award is Mike Barros, director of the City's Community Development Department. The Housing Award is presented to an individual that has exhibited dedication and commitment to housing issues, such as promoting fair housing and housing opportunities for Durham residents.
