DURHAM, N.C. - The following highlights from the February 21, 2011
Durham City Council meeting and other topics of interest will be
featured in this episode of "City Hall This Week." The show will begin
airing on Friday, February 25 at 8 p.m. and will also be available to
watch on demand at www.Durhamnc.gov/DTV8/CityHallThisWeek.cfm.

2010 Annual Crime Report Offers Encouraging News

The 2010 Annual Crime Report shows that overall crime in Durham is going
down. Part 1 Index Crime, which is the total of property and violent
crime, was at a 10-year low in 2010. Property crime was down two percent
in 2010 compared to 2009, and violent crime was up by approximately two
percent in 2010 compared to 2009. Police Chief Jose Lopez, Sr. offers
an explanation for many of those numbers in this episode of "City Hall
This Week."

Police Department Receives 2011 Fugitive Apprehension Task Force Grant

The City Council adopted an $18,638 2011 Fugitive Apprehension Task
Force grant project ordinance with the United States Marshals Service.
The agreement allows the department to be paid for overtime expenses
incurred while helping the U.S. Marshals Service apprehend fugitives.
The department is currently using money from its general fund to pay
these expenses. A local match of $3,638 is required for the department
to receive the federal grant.

Work to Repave Durham's Worst Streets Rapidly Progressing

The City Council approved four contracts that will work toward the
repaving of more than 150 miles of Durham's worst streets. In each of
the four projects, the City will pay just over $4 million to repair 36
miles of streets. Dividing the work in this way has allowed the costs to
come in lower than expected; meaning more streets than initially
anticipated will be repaired. The street repaving projects will be paid
for with the $20 million bond approved by voters in November.

Several City Parks and Recreational Facilities to Get Much-Needed
Renovations

Several City parks and recreational facilities are about to get some
long-awaited renovations. The City Council approved a $906,987 contract
for a multi-site park renovations project. The parks involved are Crest
Street, Forest Hills, and Garrett Road. In addition, improvements will
also be made to Spruce Pine Lodge. Project Manager Marilee Martin
explains what upgrades will be made at each of these sites on the
upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."
