If the pictures didn't come across in this, follow the links just to see the billboard someone chose under a headline of protecting natural beauty. And then while you are there, you might as well send the letter (-:

Dear Sierran ,

Help Us Protect Natural Beauty!

Here they go again! Legislation is making its way through the NC General Assembly that would be a huge giveaway to billboard companies at the expense of your community.

Please, contact your representative TODAY, and urge them to vote NO on SB 183 -- the Bill Board Bill!

Here is what SB 183 does:

Allows potentially thousands of existing billboards to convert to electronic billboards every 1,500 feet in commercial and industrial areas on interstates and federal primary highways -- regardless of city and county rules that may prohibit such signs.
Dramatically expands the area where trees can be clear cut in the public right of way in order to increase the billboard companies' profits.
Prohibit local tree protection regulations from being enforced in front of billboards along major corridors.
Allows billboards that are being phased out ("non-conforming signs") to instead convert to electronic signs -- even over local objections.
Please contact your State Senator today -- tell them to vote NO the Billboard Bill!

SB 183 takes away the right of local communities to control their appearance, making billboard companies more powerful than your mayor or town council. It will result in massive tree cutting on public roads to allow for an unending string of electronic billboards at 1500 foot intervals.

As the Raleigh N&O recently noted, SB 183 appears to be aimed squarely at removing rules that protect natural beauty.

Your help is needed to protect our communities by stopping the Billboard Bill from passing through the legislature!

Thanks for all you do!

P.S. Pass this along to family and friends and get them involved in the fight for North Carolina's natural beauty.
