Durham Begins Watershed Implementation Project for Two Creeks

City Will Present Goals for Northeast Creek and Crooked Creek to
Environmental Affairs Board on June 1

DURHAM, N.C. - The City of Durham Stormwater Services Division recently
launched the Northeast Creek and Crooked Creek Watershed Management
Implementation Project aimed at studying ways to revitalize the health
of the creeks and their surrounding areas as well as comply with water
quality regulations.

The project goals will be presented during the Environmental Affairs
Board meeting on June 1, 2011, at 7 p.m. in the Committee Room of City
Hall, located at 101 City Hall Plaza, Durham. Residents can provide
input and guidance about the goals and objectives to help shape and
prioritize the potential watershed improvement projects.

In June 2011, field crews will begin assessing stormwater devices in the
watersheds for Northeast Creek and Crooked Creek. Field evaluation and
assessment activities of the streams are expected to begin in September
2011. After the field work is completed, a list of prioritized potential
watershed improvement projects will be developed. The projected
completion date for this project is summer 2012.

The City has contracted with Brown and Caldwell Environmental Engineers
to complete the engineering study and assessment of Northeast Creek,
Crooked Creek, and their watersheds in the city. During the inventory
and assessment of the watersheds, residents may see engineers,
scientists, and field crews in orange vests with identifying credentials
(which they will present upon request) walking through neighborhoods and
along streams in the Northeast Creek and Crooked Creek watersheds.

The field crews will have project information sheets available upon
request. Project information sheets are also available on the City's
website at
www.DurhamNC.gov/Departments/Works/Northeast_Creek_Project.cfm. The
City plans to host additional public information meetings during the
project. The dates and locations of these meetings will be announced
soon.

The Northeast Creek and Crooked Creek Implementation Project is the next
watershed plan within a series of projects. The City is developing plans
and prioritizing projects within each watershed in phases. The
implementation plan for the Ellerbe Creek Watershed is complete. The
City's Engineering and Stormwater Services Divisions continue to work on
the Third Fork Creek Watershed Implementation Project Plan. All of these
projects will help the City prioritize and implement watershed
improvements throughout the city.

For more information about the project schedule or a map of the
watersheds, visit the City's website at www.DurhamNC.gov/Stormwater or
contact Sandra Wilbur, project manager with the City's Stormwater
Services Division of the Public Works Department, at (919) 560-4326,
ext. 30286 or via e-mail at Sandra.Wilbur at DurhamNC.gov.

The City of Durham will provide auxiliary aids and services under the
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for disabled persons who wish to
participate in June 1 public information meeting. Anyone requiring
special services should contact the City's ADA coordinator at (919)
560-4197, ext. 21254, TTY at (919) 560-1200, or via e-mail at
ADA at DurhamNC.gov, as soon as possible, but no later than 48 hours before
the scheduled meeting.
