Durham Now Repairing Major Water Main Break

Water Service At Or Near Normal Levels

DURHAM, N.C. - The City of Durham Water Management Department has
located and begun repairs to a major water main break located near Teer
Quarry where the water main crosses the Eno River. The break in this
24-inch water main affected multiple neighborhoods in Northern Durham
and downtown earlier today.

Restoring service to customers is the first priority in the event of a
water main break. City crews have isolated this break from the rest of
the system by closing valves on either side of the break. Most customers
should now see their water service return to normal or near-normal
levels within the next hour. If customers note air in their internal
water lines, they are encouraged to run their faucets for up to two
minutes to flush their lines.

The second priority after restoring service is to evaluate the extent of
the break and begin the repair. At this time, City crews have begun
repairs to this broken water main. As part of this process, they will
investigate to try and determine the cause of the break, which is not
known at this time.

If customers in this area do not have their water service restored by 5
p.m. today, they should contact the Water Management Department's
after-hours emergency line at (919) 560-4344.
