New "City Hall This Week" Begins Tonight

New Episode Begins Airing Friday, October 21 on DTV8 and "On Demand" on
the City's DTV8 Website

DURHAM, N.C. - The following highlights from the October 17, 2011 Durham
City Council meeting and other topics of interest will be featured in
this episode of "City Hall This Week." The show begins airing on Friday,
October 21 at 8 p.m. and will also be available to watch on demand at
www.DurhamNC.gov/DTV8/CityHallThisWeek.cfm.

City Council Approves Agreement for Continued Support of the Triangle
Regional Model

The Triangle Regional Travel Demand Model will continue to be updated
and improved at N.C. State University. The model is a key tool in
preparing long-range transportation plans, individual project plans, and
establishing air quality standards in order to have access to federal
transportation funds. The City Council approved a $121,016 agreement
with N.C. State University for its services, which will allow the model
to be managed at a central location. Transportation Department Technical
Services Team Leader Leta Huntsinger explains why managing the model at
N.C. State University allows it to be a truly regional tool on the
upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."

Durham's Water Connection with Raleigh Moves Forward

Durham's efforts to create more water connections with its partners
throughout the Triangle are moving forward. The City Council approved
adding $327,750 to the Raleigh Interconnection Project, which will
connect Durham and Raleigh's water distribution systems. The connection
is being made to Durham's system at the intersection of Miami Boulevard
and Angier Avenue and to Raleigh's system at the intersection of U.S.
Highway 70 and T.W. Alexander Drive. Once the project is finished,
Durham will be able to buy water from, or sell water to, the City of
Raleigh during emergencies or drought events.

Durham Police Department Steps Up Ability to Fight Crime More
Efficiently

The Durham Police Department is taking a significant step forward in its
ability to fight crime more efficiently. Construction of a firearms
testing laboratory is nearly complete, and the City Council has approved
$35,000 to help pay for Firearms Analyst Training. Firearms Analyst
Donna Jackson explains why the lab and the additional training may help
move investigations forward more quickly on the upcoming episode of
"City Hall This Week."

City Receives Bike Safe Grant

The Durham Police Department can now help more motorcyclists keep
themselves safe on the city's streets. The department has been awarded a
$93,500 grant from the Triad Region Bike Safe Initiative, part of the
Governor's Highway Safety Program. The program's goal is to reduce
crashes and fatalities for motorcyclists by assessing their current
driving skills and teaching them safe driving techniques. The grant will
allow Durham's motorcycle unit to become the Triad Regional Coordinator,
which will enable it to conduct checkpoints, bike safe classes, and to
organize and assist other agencies in Bike Safe classes across the Triad
area.
