Durham County Library Hosts a Small Business Start-up Seminar

Program:             Small Business Start-Up Seminar
Date:                     Saturday, March 31
Time:                    10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Location:             Southwest Regional Library

Cost:                      Free and open to the public
About:    Durham County Library will host a seminar for people interested in starting a small business. Entrepreneurs and other local experts will lead the following sessions:

The Nuts and Bolts of Starting a Business (10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.)

Participants will discover what it takes to start a business from the ground up, including: the importance of a business plan, the features of various business structures, how to determine zoning, licensing guidelines and business regulations and more. Led by Carl Baumann, SCORE, Chapel Hill.

Small Business Success Stories (12 noon - 1:30 p.m.)

A panel of Triangle-based business women will share the stories of their success.

Panels members: Gia Peebles, Aura Salon and Boutique; Kathryn Kirk, Kirk Imports, Inc.; Lisa Stella, Kismet Crackers, LLC; Misty Pridgeon, NC Center for Physical Therapy; Pamela Keels-Woodyard, Right Time Kids Drop-In Childcare. Moderator: Laura Kiley, Kiley and Associates, LLC.

Business Resources and Financial Records (2 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.)

Seminar participants will learn what resources are available for those planning to start a business, what the library has to offer, and how to arrange and keep sound financial records.

Led by Kathy Makens, Durham County Library; and Jackie McLaughlin, Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce.

How to Start an Online Business (4 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.)

Jackie McLaughlin of the Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce will explore the basics of starting an online business, from vetting an idea, to choosing a URL, to design and search engine optimization. This class is for beginners who are interested in earning an income from the World Wide Web but have no idea where to start.
