DURHAM, N.C. - The following highlights from the May 7, 2012 Durham City
Council meetings and other topics of interest will be featured in this
episode of "City Hall This Week." The show begins airing on Friday, May
11 at 8 p.m. on DTV8 (Time Warner Cable channel 8) and will also be

City Council Adopts Water and Sewer Rate Increase

Durham's water and sewer rates will be increasing in moderate increments
based on the City's tiered consumption levels. The increases are
expected to raise nearly $2 million in revenue that will be used for
short and long-term improvements to the City's water and sewer system.
Water Management Department Director Don Greeley explains what some of
those improvements are and what the increases will mean for average
customers in this episode of "City Hall This Week."

Residents to Pay More for Petitioned Sidewalk Improvements

The price of building new resident-petitioned sidewalks is going up for
the residents who request they be built. The City Council adopted a
resolution increasing the assessment rate and pay period for petitioned
sidewalk improvements. The previous rate residents had to pay for
sidewalk construction was $5 per linear foot. The new rate is $35 per
linear foot. Engineering and Stormwater Services Assistant Manager
Robert Joyner with the City's Public Works Department explains why the
change was needed in this episode of "City Hall This Week."

Financial Hardship Criteria Established for Harvard Avenue Special
Assessments

Residents on Harvard Avenue will have a little longer than is normal to
pay the City back for recent improvements made to their street. The City
Council adopted a resolution establishing Financial Hardship Criteria
for the Harvard Avenue Special Assessments. The assessments were levied
after a number of improvements were made from South Benjamine Street to
Miami Boulevard. Engineering and Stormwater Services Manager Ed Venable
with the City's Public Works Department explains what the criteria are
and why they were established in this episode of "City Hall This Week."

Other interviews featured in this episode of "City Hall This Week":

* Master Officer Erwin C. Baker, community liaison officer for
the Durham Police Department - Explains what the Police Athletic League
is and how it's working to expand.
