Durham Begins Church Street Parking Deck Repairs
Monthly and Hourly Parking to Remain Throughout Construction

DURHAM, N.C. - Beginning Monday, February 3, construction will get under way to make repairs to the City of Durham's Church Street Parking Deck.

The estimated six-month project, located at 109 S. Mangum St., will include structural repairs throughout the deck to the steel frame and concrete slabs, metal deck repairs, elevated ramp replacement, repair of all stairs, lead paint abatement, replacement of expansion joints and sealants, and restriping of all parking stalls. The work will also include improvements to make the deck compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The entire project should be completed this summer.

During the course of the project, both monthly and hourly parking will remain inside the parking deck, but may be temporarily relocated to different levels as needed. There will also be some general construction noise associated with the project, which could be heard by businesses and residences nearby. Any high-noise operations will be communicated to nearby neighbors before work begins and the City's contractor will also use dust control measures, such as temporary partitions, around concrete work zones. There will also be times when the City's contractor will need access to the exterior of the parking deck, but the contractor will work to keep disruptions to pedestrian traffic to a minimum.

The Church Street Parking Deck contains 406 spaces and was built in 1974. There have been no major alterations, improvements, or maintenance efforts undertaken since it was constructed. The project will cost $985,000 with work being overseen by the City's General Services Department and performed by the City's contractor, Tendon Systems LLC.
