ANNOUNCEMENT
The Durham Board of County Commissioners solicits applicants to fill positions on the following citizen boards and commissions:

*         -Board of Adjustment (1 Position - Regular Member)
o    This board holds quasi-judicial public hearings to determine requests made by property owners in the City and County of Durham for minor and custodial care special use permits, variances and appeals of administrative interpretations or decision, as authorized by State law and local ordinance

*         -Citizens Advisory Committee (1 At-Large Position)

o    This committee works to facilitate citizen participation in the planning and implementation of the Durham Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG). The CDBG program works to ensure decent affordable housing, to provide services to the most vulnerable in our communities, and to create jobs through the expansion and retention of businesses. The CDBG is an important tool for helping our local government officials and administrators to tackle many serious challenges facing our community
*         Criminal Justice Advisory Committee (6 Positions - 2 At-Large, 1 Defense Attorney, 1 DSS Director or Designee, 1 Public Health Director, 1 Sheriff or Designee)

o    This committee was established in 1995 as a statutory requirement to participate in the state-local Criminal Justice Partnership Program grant process. The purpose of the committee is to develop a comprehensive continuum of services for the adult criminal justice system, identify services gaps, and develop intervention strategies and comprehensive solutions. The committee is advisory in nature and has no authority over any public or private entity
*         -Environmental Affairs Board (2 Positions - 1 Air Resources, 1 Public Policy)
o    This board was established in 1991, in recognition of the importance of local cooperation on environmental issues. This is an advisory board of appointed volunteer citizens to provide the City and County with expert and comprehensive advice on various environmental matters. It is also a mechanism for facilitating communication between the public and local government leaders

*         -Historic Preservation Commission (1 At-Large Position)

o    This commission holds quasi-judicial public hearings to determine whether requested changes to the exterior of historic district or landmark properties are appropriate by State law, local ordinance and historic preservation plans for the districts
*         -Homeless Services Advisory Committee (1 Position - Member of Faith Community)

o    This committee advises the Durham Board of County Commissioners and the Durham City Council on the implementation of collaborative initiatives to prevent and end homelessness in Durham
*         -Juvenile Crime Prevention Council (6 Positions - 1 Person Under Age 18, 1 Representative of Parks and Recreation, 1 Member of Faith Community, 1 Representative of United Way or Other Non-Profit Organization, 1 Member of the Business Community, 1 Youth Home Director)

o    This council reviews the needs of Durham juveniles who are at risk of delinquency or who have been adjudicated, undisciplined, or delinquent, review and evaluate the resources available to address those needs, develop and implement a request for proposals process, and submit a written plan of action for the expenditure of juvenile sanction and prevention funds to the Durham Board of County Commissioners for its approval
*         -Library Board of Trustees (3 At-Large Positions)
o    This board advises the Library Director and the County Manager on issues related to the library, and acts as a liaison between Durham County Library and the community

*         -Memorial Stadium Authority (1 At-Large Position)

o    The authority supervises and directs the general operation of Memorial Stadium. It establishes policies relative to maintenance, fees and use of the facility
*      -Open Space and Trails Commission (1 Position - Triangle Township)
o    This commission advises the City Council and the Board of Commissioners on matters relating to open space preservation and trail development while involving and educating all segments of the Durham community

*      -Operation Breakthrough Board of Trustees (1 At-Large Position)

 *   The board of trustees represents the low-income constituency, as well as public and private sector organizations. Operation Breakthrough promotes individual and family self-sufficiency, through advocacy, referrals and directly providing comprehensive high quality services to low-income families and individuals within Durham County

*      -Planning Commission (3 Positions - 1 At-Large, 1 Triangle Township, 1 Oak Grove/Carr Townships)

o    This commission reviews recommended plans, policies and reports of the professional planning staff and makes recommendations concerning them to the governing bodies, including rezoning and zoning ordinance changes. Other duties include reviewing reports, proposing and reviewing policies and procedures for encouraging broad public input on all plans and reporting to the governing bodies on the conditions of the planning jurisdiction and the status of planning activities
*      -Public Health Board (1 Position - Engineer)
o     This board formulates policies and procedures for the Durham County Department of Public Health. The Board works with Public Health Department administrators, clinicians, staff and our community to promote health, protect the environment and prevent disease

*      -Social Services Board (1 At-Large Position)

o     The board is responsible for the administration of Durham County social services by selecting the director, developing policies to improve social conditions, presenting a budget to the County Commissioners and administering public assistance
*      -Women's Commission (4 At-Large Positions)

o     This commission strives to educate the community and advise the Durham County Board of Commissioners as necessary on issues relating to the changing social and economic conditions of women in the County. The Commission develops information systems; provides advice; conducts research; hosts educational programming; analyses policy and advocates for women's issues to improve the lives of and opportunities for all women
*         -Workforce Development Board  (4 Positions - 2 Community-Based Organization, 1 DSS Director or Designee, 1 Private Sector/Seeking Individuals in Executive Leadership)

o     The purpose of the board is to facilitate, plan and coordinate workforce development resources to maximize the efforts of government, business, and education. Through collaborative partnerships, the board is the local policy organization responsible for the planning, oversight and coordination of workforce development initiatives that help support economic development in Durham
Property tax listing must be current.  County and City taxes must not reflect any delinquencies
before an application is considered.
