Durham Wins Big at 2013-2014 PTI Technology Solutions Awards

DURHAM, N.C. - The City of Durham has brought home five national awards for its use of technology. The Public Technology Institute (PTI) has recognized the City's Technology Solutions Department for its use of technology to improve service delivery, reduce costs and generate revenues through its 2013-2014 PTI: Technology Solutions Awards.

According to CIO Kerry Goode with the City's Technology Solutions Department, these awards showcase how the City is using technology to benefit residents and employees. "The City winning five nationally recognized awards for technology solutions demonstrates that we are using information technology in an innovative and creative manner to solve business problems that align to the our Strategic Plan goals," Goode said.

In its population category of 100,000-349,999, the City won five awards, more than any other city in the United States, followed by Scottsdale, Ariz.; Bellevue, Wash.; Fontana, Calif.; Cincinnati, Ohio; and Longboat Key, Fla. The City also won more than any other city in North Carolina, followed by Charlotte and Raleigh, both with two awards, and Kernersville with one award. The City won in the following categories:

IT & Telecommunications
*         Winner: Email Archiving (email archival system to improve compliance with the state records retention law and email storage)
*         Honorable Mention: End Point Replacement Model (centralized replacement of end points, such as PCs, iPads and laptops, to provide employees with reliable equipment)

Data & Performance Metrics
*         Significant Achievement: Great Things Happen When Performance Measures Intersect With Community Engagement (City's Strategic Plan dashboard; http://www.DurhamNC.gov/StrategicPlan/Goals)

Web Management & e-Government
*         Significant Achievement: City of Durham Intranet Improves Productivity, Collaboration and Communication (CODI, an employee Intranet site, which allows employees to more easily collaborate. CODINETX also allows internal and external users to work together on documents and share information)

Geospatial Information Systems (GIS)
*         Honorable Mention: Durham Neighborhood Compass (web-based mapping tool designed to help users identify areas of need and opportunity in their neighborhoods; http://Compass.DurhamNC.gov<http://compass.durhamnc.gov/>)
