City Leaders Consider Draft Downtown Open Space Plan
City leaders are now considering proposed goals and recommendations for the use of open space in Downtown Durham. The City-County Planning Department presented the draft Downtown Open Space plan to the City Council during its work session on July 24. Urban Designer Tom Dawson describes why the plan is needed and what its goals are on the upcoming edition of "City Hall This Week."

Replacement of Downtown Loop Waterlines Moves Forward
The replacement of the waterlines inside the Downtown loop is moving forward. The City will pay $6.4 million to replace approximately 12,000 linear feet of existing waterlines. The project will address the area south of Morgan Street and north of Ramseur Street. The new waterlines will provide more reliable service to existing customers, decrease service interruptions, increase the available fire flow and provide better water quality.

New Lighting to be Installed at Snow Hill Road Park Soccer Fields
The soccer fields at Snow Hill Road Park will soon be suitable for playing at night and year round. The City will spend $261,000 on lights and irrigation for two soccer fields at the park. The lighting that will be installed is the standard system for remote control sports lighting in City parks. It is currently in operation at 37 City sports fields and tennis courts in Durham.

Bull City Connector Helps Connect City Residents With Fresh and Healthy Food
The Bull City Connector bus service is helping to connect the City's residents with the fresh and healthy food available at the Durham Farmers' Market. The bus runs the route from the Durham Station to the Farmers' Market every 15 minutes from 7:30 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. on Saturdays. It's part of a pilot program that allows people who lack transportation to have a chance to shop for fruits, vegetables and other healthy foods. The fare-free program is funded by DATA and will continue until August 23.
