Big Sweep Litter Cleanup Set for October 4
Volunteers Needed for Sites Across Durham

DURHAM, N.C. - Residents ready to boost Durham's image and protect fish and wildlife from harmful litter should volunteer for next month's Big Sweep.

Last year's annual fall cleanup netted more than 10,000 pounds of trash and recyclables that would have otherwise washed downstream into drinking water reservoirs. Volunteers can now sign up online at http://Bit.ly/DurhamBigSweep to join an existing cleanup or to register a cleanup site in their own neighborhood. If volunteers cannot participate on October 4, they are encouraged to pick another day in October to roll up their sleeves and help clean up Durham.

According to Keep Durham Beautiful Executive Director Tania Dautlick, a recent study revealed an average of 631 pieces of litter in a four foot square area in one of Durham's litter hot spots. "We can do better," Dautlick said. "We are a community that takes tremendous pride in everything Durham, and we can all do our part to transform litter hot spots into green spots."

For more information, contact Soil Conservationist and Education Coordinator Jennifer Brooks with the Durham County Soil and Water Conservation District at (919) 560-0558 or by email at jbrooks at dconc.gov<mailto:jbrooks at dconc.gov>.

Durham's Big Sweep is sponsored by Brooks' agency along with Keep Durham Beautiful and the City of Durham Public Works Department Stormwater and GIS Services Division. The City of Durham Neighborhood Improvement Services Department and the Durham County Department of General Services will lend support by picking up trash and recyclables at each cleanup site.
