Subject: RE: Brick Gutters/Repaving
Mr. Katz:
The foreman for the contractor was incorrect; we are not paving over the
brick gutter that are currently exposed and are in good condition on
Elizabeth St. The contract manager for this project has met with the paving
contractor on site this afternoon to clarify the limits of the repaving on
this street.
The plan is to perform profile milling of the asphalt (which has been
completed) and to mill an additional 2-3 inches from the center of the
traveled lanes within Elizabeth Street prior to repaving the street with 2-3
inches of leveling course asphalt and a final riding course of asphalt.
Every effort is being made to preserve the gutters as they currently exist.
The foreman has been corrected so this should not be an issue going forward.
Please feel free to call or email with any additional question or concerns.

Subject: Brick Gutters/Repaving
Mr. Williams,
This morning I spoke with the foreman of a street repaving project on
Elizabeth just south of E. Trinity. Although this section of street has
well-preserved brick gutters in excellent condition, the foreman stated that
the current plan was to pave directly over them.
After all of the discussions over the past couple of years on this
subject with you and on various neighborhood listservs, it has been made
abundantly clear that residents of downtown neighborhoods care about their
brick gutters and granite curbs and that these features should only be
destroyed or removed when there is a clear justification and prior
notification given to the relevant neighborhood.
While it's my hope that the foreman misspoke, I would appreciate it if
you could confirm and clarify with us the plan for the Elizabeth St.
repaving project.
Sincerely,
-Peter Katz
