Folks
While I agree with Don's advice about calling 560-1200 if you're having
problems with a City street tree, in the circumstances described below, the
first call should be to 911 !!
I suggested that to Kevin Lilly (privately, last night) and from the email
he just sent to several participants, he seems to agree.
That's a short thread below, but even a complete stranger to Durham should
note the following gleaned only from that text:
Not one, but TWO companies are knocking on doors offering to do work only
authorized to be performed by Duke Power or the City of Durham. Citations
and/or Fines can be issued to all others.
Offering to charge our citizens for work that should be done at no charge,
is the first red flag. The first question that should be asked, "Do you
have a vendor's licence?"
No vendor's permit equals MISDEMEANOR (AKA: Against the Law!) call Police!
The discussion regarding how Duke Energy performs this trimming work is
valuable and should continue, but the two companies knocking on doors
shouldn't just be stopped, they should probably be arrested.

I don't disagree with Rodrigo, although I personally would use less
inflammatory language. I didn't say that Duke Energy did a great job pruning.
I've spent a lot of time talking to their arborists, and to the city's, and I
do not like the result of Duke's work. There's a long story there about
length of pruning cycles, reliability of major transmission circuits, amount of
wood removed and Duke's concerns vs. the city's concerns. I'll share that
with anyone that wants the long story.
When Duke started their current pruning cycle I sent emails to the
listserve and INC, and Duke contacted every household that will be affected, and
there was very little interest. Duke held a public meeting which seven
people attended. Duke will be pruning the circuit along West Club, probably
sometime in the next few months.

I will have to disagree with Don on one major point: Duke will butcher
your tree.... I am sure I speak for the masses here who have seen first hand
Dukes bloody work.

On the Watts Hospital Hillandale list there has been discussion about two
companies offering to trim "street trees" and trees "growing into the power
lines".
Two things to know:
--Duke Energy is the only company approved to prune the trees in the power
lines. They are specially trained to deal with the safety issues.
--The city jealously guards the health of its trees--that's any tree
planted within the right of way, usually about six feet from the back of the
curb. Trimming city trees without written permission results in a citation and
fine. The reason for this is that the city is responsible for anything
that happens with those trees--if one falls on a house or in the street or
injures someone. Improper pruning can severely damage a tree.
If someone stops by and claims they are working for either Duke Energy or
the City of Durham, and they're not carrying identification from either
Duke or the city, don't believe them. Don't hire them, and don't pay them.
If you have a problem with a street tree just call Durham One Call at
_919-560-1200_ (tel:919-560-1200) . The city arborists are great and will be
happy to take a look. If it's an issue with a power line, the city staff will
contact Duke Energy for you.
Best,
Don
