Don, as you know, the even more important recommendation in that report is
for a detailed inventory of the overall tree canopy, not just those on city
property and hopefully county-wide.

Since 1976, we've been surrendering about 2.5 acres a day on average to
development, outpacing the increase in population by 8 to 1, nearly all of
it replacing tree canopy with impervious surface.  This information is
available from RECI, an institute of the UNC system that collaborates with
Duke.

While this is less than Raleigh and Charlotte were chewing up, it is
probably comparable when weighted for developable land area.  I'm glad the
report references the need to get a better handle on this so we truly need
to know how many trees we need to be planting or incentivizing.

There are few things as emblematic as trees for why Durham is worthy of
love from residents and visitors....or why that is at risk.
