Durham Hosts Compact Neighborhood Planning Community Meetings
Meetings Set to Encourage Resident Input for Neighborhoods Near Future Light Rail Transit Stations

DURHAM, N.C. - Durham residents interested in giving their input on how compact neighborhoods near planned light rail transit stations are drawn on Durham's Future Land Use Map should mark their calendars now to attend community meetings next month.

The Durham City-County Planning Department is hosting five meetings throughout Durham County so residents can lend their voices to inform the Compact Neighborhood Planning process. The meetings will provide information on the effort to update Durham's Comprehensive Plan in areas around the planned Durham-Orange Light Rail Transit Stations, and seek resident feedback and ideas about where transit-oriented development that is mixed use and pedestrian-friendly is appropriate. The events will be conducted as workshops with a presentation at the beginning. The community input portion will then focus on the specific area in which the meeting is located. The community meetings are as follows:

Patterson Place
Thursday, April 9 at 6:30 p.m.
Githens Middle School
4800 Old Chapel Hill Rd.

Medical Center
Thursday, April 16 at 6 p.m.
W.I. Patterson Community Center
2614 Crest St.

Alston Avenue
Thursday, April 23 at 6:30 p.m.
Eastway Elementary School
610 N. Alston Ave.

South Square/MLK Jr.
Tuesday, April 28 at 6 p.m.
Southwest Regional Library
3605 Shannon Rd.

Leigh Village
Thursday, April 30 at 6:30 p.m.
Creekside Elementary School
5321 Ephesus Church Rd.

According to Project Manager Hannah Jacobson with the Durham City-County Planning Department, this planning process is necessary as more households and jobs locate in Durham, the pattern of development will need to shift to a more compact form. "In general, supporting compact development in connection with transit can be beneficial in a variety of ways. It can alleviate traffic congestion, improve public health by increasing opportunities to walk, decrease transportation expenses, connect people who do not have access to cars with jobs, and reduce suburban sprawl," Jacobson said. "This planning process will define how compact neighborhoods are drawn on Durham's Future Land Use Map, which acts as policy vision and guide for future development. Incorporating the vision of our residents is an important part of this process."
