Durham Celebrates National Fair Housing Month
Multiple Events in April Are Free and Open to the Public

DURHAM, N.C. - April is National Fair Housing month and residents and property owners interested in learning how to help create equal housing opportunities in every Durham neighborhood should mark their calendars now to attend several upcoming events.

The Human Relations Division of the City's Neighborhood Improvement Services Department, along with a number of community partners, are hosting the following events which are free and open to the public.

Fair Housing Month Proclamation
*         Monday, April 6 at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, City Hall, 101 City Hall Plaza
*         Sponsored by the City's Human Relations Division and the City's Human Relations Commission

Fair Housing Training Presentation - "Know Your Rights"
*         Wednesday, April 8 from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at J.J. Henderson Housing Center, 807 S. Duke St.
*         Presented by the City's Human Relations Division

Second Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Good Neighbor Prayer Brunch and Awards Program
*         Saturday, April 11 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 305 E. Main St.
*         Sponsored by the Durham Community Martin Luther King, Jr. Steering Committee, City's Human Relations Division, City's Human Relations Commission, Durham Congregations In Action, First Presbyterian Church, Duke-Durham Neighborhood Partnership, and other organizations

*         Presented by Fair Housing Project of N.C. and the City's Human Relations Division

Human Relations Outreach Booth at Bull City Play Streets
*         Saturday, April 18 from 9 a.m. to noon at W.G. Pearson Elementary School, 3501 Fayetteville St.
*         Sponsored by the City's Neighborhood Improvement Services Department, Durham County Public Health Department, Lisa P Angels Foundation, and Partnership for Healthier America

Bilingual Fair Housing Training - "Know Your Rights"
*         Thursday, April 23 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Latino Community Credit Union, 100 W. Morgan St.
*         Presented by the City's Human Relations Division

Fair Housing Education Week - April 27-30
*         Durham Public Schools 5th Grade Classes
*         Discussion on fair housing and diversity exercises (one-hour presentations)
*         Presented by the City's Human Relations Division

About the Human Relations Division in the City of Durham Neighborhood Improvement Services Department

The Neighborhood Improvement Services Department<http://durhamnc.gov/ich/cb/nis/Pages/Home.aspx> works to preserve and improve quality of life conditions for Durham residents, and to encourage active participation in neighborhood redevelopment and public policy and decision making dialogue. The department's Community Engagement and Human Relations staffs provide outreach and education to Durham residents and community organizations. The department's Human Relations Division<http://durhamnc.gov/ich/cb/nis/Pages/HumanRelations.aspx> is responsible for enforcement of the City of Durham Fair Housing Ordinance and the federal Fair Housing Act. HUD provides funding annually for the Division to investigate housing complaints in the City of Durham that allege discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex (gender), religion, national origin, physical or mental handicap or familial status (families with children). The Human Relations Division also provides oversight to the City of Durham Human Relations Commission<http://durhamnc.gov/ich/cb/nis/Pages/Human-Relations-Commission.aspx>, which is comprised of 15 Durham residents who meet monthly to work on activities designed to improve human relations and promote harmony throughout Durham. Guided by the City's Strategic Plan<http://www.durhamnc.gov/StrategicPlan/Goals/>, the department helps ensure that Durham has thriving, livable neighborhoods by providing the highest quality of services to engage and educate the community, eradicate blight, ensure safer neighborhoods, and enhance neighborhood revitalization.
