Tree Keeper Workshop Offered in July
Tree Keepers Help Grow and Protect Durham’s Tree Canopy; July 6 Registration Deadline

DURHAM, N.C. – Four half-day workshops for anyone interested in learning more about urban tree care will be offered in Durham next month, and participants will then join the ranks of the community’s Tree Keepers.

On Wednesday, July 8, Friday, July 10, Wednesday, July 22 and Friday, July 24, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day, workshop participants will learn about a wide variety of techniques to help expand, maintain, and protect Durham’s trees. Topics will include tree planting, maintenance, basic identification, tree insects and disease, and tree protection methods. Participants are each expected to provide 15 hours of volunteer tree care over the next 12 months as part of the Tree Keeper corps.

The workshop will be held at the Durham County Cooperative Extension, located at 721 Foster St., and at the City of Durham General Services Department, located at 2011 Fay St. The cost to attend is $25 per person, which includes materials. A few scholarships are available and the registration deadline is Monday, July 6.

The workshop is sponsored by Trees Across Durham<http://tinyurl.com/DurhamTrees>, a broad-based partnership dedicated to making Durham a healthier and greener community now and in the future through the planting and protection of trees, the education of tree care-takers and the general public about how to maintain healthy trees, and the measurement and communication of the benefits trees provide to our environment and community.

According to Durham City-County Sustainability Manager Tobin Freid, this workshop will expand Durham’s ability to increase and protect our tree resources by training a Tree Keeper volunteer force. “Not only will workshop attendees learn directly from qualified professionals, but they will also help plant, care for, and inventory trees through 15 hours of service to our community,” Freid said.

To register for this workshop, visit the Greener Durham website<http://durhamnc.gov/ich/cmo/sustainability/Pages/Events.aspx> or contact Durham City-County Sustainability Specialist Megan Carroll at (919) 560-7993 or by email<mailto:mcarroll at dconc.gov>.
