Durham Honored with Housing North Carolina Awards
Awards Recognize Two Communities for Excellence in Affordable Housing

DURHAM, N.C. - The City of Durham Bungalows at Southside<http://durhamnc.gov/487/Southside-Revitalization> and CASA's Denson Apartments for Veterans<http://www.casanc.org/denson-apartments-phase-1-durham/> have received statewide recognition for excellence in affordable housing.

Earlier today, the City's Community Development Department<http://durhamnc.gov/445/Community-Development> and CASA<http://www.casanc.org/> each accepted their 2015 Housing North Carolina Awards from the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency<http://www.nchfa.com/>, which honored these two projects for their affordability, design, sustainability, community contribution, resident services, and creative partnerships.

The Housing North Carolina Awards<http://www.nchousingconference.com/> is a 26-year-old statewide awards program which recognizes outstanding homeownership, rental and supportive housing developments that can serve as models for other communities. Durham communities were recognized with two of the five awards presented today during the N.C. Affordable Housing Conference Luncheon at the Raleigh Convention Center.

The Bungalows at Southside<http://durhamnc.gov/487/Southside-Revitalization> is part of a major revitalization project of the City, which is bringing 48 new homes to an area that previously was challenged by disinvestment. The Bungalows at Southside are part of the City's much larger Southside Revitalization Project, which covers approximately 125 acres on the southern edge of downtown and includes a mix of homes, apartment communities, and commercial development. Prior to redevelopment, the area had the highest concentration of vacant lots and homes in the city, and the lowest rate of homeownership.

The Denson Apartments for Veterans<http://www.casanc.org/denson-apartments-phase-1-durham/> is the first permanent supportive housing in Durham for veterans who are homeless and have disabilities. The first phase of the complex includes 11 apartments with rent set at 30 percent of the tenant's income and includes all utilities. Denson Apartments for Veterans was developed by CASA in partnership with the City of Durham<http://durhamnc.gov/445/Community-Development>, The Home Depot Foundation<http://www.homedepotfoundation.org/>, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)<http://portal.hud.gov/hudportal/HUD> and the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency<http://www.nchfa.com/>, with construction financing from the State Employees' Credit Union<https://www.ncsecu.org/>. CASA, a non-profit affordable housing developer and property manager based in the Triangle, is currently developing phase two of the Denson Apartments for Veterans, adding 12 more apartments with the support of the Durham community.
