Hi neighbors,

The steep rise in our property tax assessments is going to be especially
hard for older or disabled homeowners on fixed incomes, but fortunately
many of them can get relief through the Homestead Exclusion. A flyer about
the Homestead Exclusion is included with tax assessments, but still many
people are unaware of it. Please help spread the word to your neighbors
who might be able to take advantage of it. The Homestead Exclusion gives
up to a 50% reduction in assessed value to homeowners who earn $29,500 a
year or less and are 65 or older or on permanent disability. Some
important notes about it:

1. Homeowners can appeal their assessed value and also apply for a
Homestead Exclusion-one does not exclude the other.

2. If a homeowner calls the county about the Homestead Exclusion,
county staff will direct them to apply via a website. This is fine for
homeowners who are web-savvy but,

3. Homeowners who are not web savvy should not be afraid to ask county
staff to help them apply. The county told me that homeowners can apply for
the Homestead Exclusion in person by going to the county's Land Records
department at 200 East Main Street.

Thanks for your help spreading the word. It might make the difference in
someone being able to stay in their home.
