Durham YouthWork Offers Summer Internship Application Assistance

Sessions Throughout March to Help Youth Complete Applications by March 31 Deadline

DURHAM, N.C. - Durham youth, ages 14 to 24, who need help completing their applications for summer internships will now have several opportunities this month thanks to the Durham YouthWork Internship Program (DYIP)<http://durhamnc.gov/598/YouthWork-Internship-Program>.

Applications are now being accepted online<http://durhamnc.gov/1473/City-Jobs> for summer employment opportunities that will be available this year through the DYIP. Potential applicants may apply for DYIP positions by visiting the City's website<http://durhamnc.gov/1473/City-Jobs>. The position name is listed as "Durham YouthWork Intern" and the deadline to apply is Thursday, March 31.

To help youth complete the online application, City staff will be hosting the following internship application assistance sessions:

* Wednesday, March 9 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Hoover Road Community Center, 1126 Hoover Rd.

* Wednesday, March 16 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Weaver Street Community Center, 3000 E. Weaver St.

* Friday, March 18 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Holton Career and Resource Center Second Floor Computer Lab, 401 N. Driver St.

* Tuesday, March 22 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Durham Teen Center, 1011 Cornell St.

* Tuesday, March 29 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Southside Community Center, 201 Enterprise St.

The DYIP, a program of the Durham Workforce Development Board, is administered by the City of Durham Office of Economic and Workforce Development and is a partnership between the City, Durham County, Durham Public Schools, Durham Technical Community College, and Made in Durham.

Internship placements within the City include the Office of Economic and Workforce Development, Durham Parks and Recreation, Public Works Department, Durham One Call, and others. Other partners include the Durham County government, Durham Public Schools, Durham Technical Community College, North Carolina Central University as well as many local businesses and non-profit organizations. The selected young people will begin work in mid-June with job assignments typically lasting between six and eight weeks. Participants will also take part in a job skills workshop led by Durham Public Schools and assisted by professionals from local businesses and organizations.

If youth applicants or their parents/guardians have questions about the DYIP application process, contact Employment Program Coordinator James Dickens with the City's Office of Economic and Workforce Development at (919) 560-4965, ext. 15217 or by email<mailto:James.Dickens at DurhamNC.gov>.

The DYIP does receive more applications than internship placements available, so applying does not guarantee an internship. To help provide more internship opportunities for Durham youth, the DYIP is seeking businesses and organizations interested in hiring youth for the summer and/or after-school internships. Businesses can sign up to participate by completing an online position request form<http://durhamnc.gov/602/Business-Information> or by contacting Senior Employment Program Coordinator Malinda Todd with the City's Office of Economic and Workforce Development at (919) 560-4965, ext.15220 or by email<mailto:Malinda.Todd at DurhamNC.gov>.
