As we remember our neighbor Paul Luebke, please take a moment to remind
yourself of the many ways in which Paul helped us and all North Carolinians
throughout his 41 years in Durham.

Three videos, filmed in July at the celebration honoring Paul's 25 years in
the General Assembly, bring to mind many of the political victories that
Paul helped lead -- and some of the setbacks. All can be found at

In the video featuring him, Paul notes that a legislator's job is "to help
the community...and it doesn't necessarily mean being on page one of the
newspaper." He recalls with particular pride the repeal of North Carolina's
food tax. "People don't know how hard it was to fight that battle." (5:33)

Paul's son, Theo, remembers learning early on from Paul that "Winning
elections matters...Elections are one of the central way sin which we
allocate power and decision-making in this country." He thanks his Dad for
giving him "the gift of knowing...what it meant to be part of a community
that fights for things...that matter." (11:46)

Another neighbor, City Councilman Steve Schewel, recalls some of the
accomplishments in which Paul was a leader before his election to the state
house -- the founding of the People's Alliance, saving the Crest St.
community when the Durham - Raleigh expressway was built, pushing for city
ownership of the bus system formerly run by Duke Power and forging Durham's
progressive biracial majority. (11:13)
