Third Quarter Crime Report Offers Encouraging News
The Durham Police Department's third quarter crime report<http://durhamnc.gov/DocumentCenter/View/13069> is offering some encouraging news about crime. The report shows that overall Part 1 Index Crime, which includes Part 1 Property and Violent Crime, dropped by 7 percent during the first nine months of 2016 compared to the same period in 2015. Part 1 Violent Crime dropped slightly during the first three quarters of 2016, and Part 1 Property Crime dropped by 8 percent compared to the same period last year.

Durham Police Get New Vehicles for Take-Home Car Program
The Durham Police Department is getting 35 new vehicles<http://cityordinances.durhamnc.gov/OnBaseAgendaOnline/Documents/ViewDocument/Final-Published%20Attachment%20-%2011472%20-%20MEMO%20-%20STATE%20CONTRACT%20PURCHASE-VEHICLES%20-.pdf?meetingId=157&documentType=Agenda&itemId=2472&publishId=10726&isSection=false> as part of its Take-Home Car Program. The initiative is a three-year, phased-in program to encourage officers to become more visible in the Durham neighborhoods in which they live. Purchasing the cars will cost approximately $1.1 million.

City Examines Additional Ways to Get More Residents Involved in Budget Process
The City is looking at additional ways to get more residents involved in its budget process. Currently, a resident survey, Coffees with Council, public hearings, a Citizen Capital Improvement Panel, and strategic planning are used to gain feedback on spending priorities. Trash Study Identifies Room for Improvement
A recent study<http://cityordinances.durhamnc.gov/OnBaseAgendaOnline/Documents/ViewDocument/WS-Published%20Attachment%20-%2011457%20-%20PRESENTATION%20-%20PRESENTATION-%20WASTE%20CHARECTERIZAT.pdf?meetingId=156&documentType=Agenda&itemId=2405&publishId=9304&isSection=false> shows that much of what Durham residents are throwing out with their trash should be recycled. Fiber products and containers that are currently accepted in the City's recycling program provide some of the biggest areas for improvement. Find out what the Solid Waste Management Department will be doing with the study results.
