Durham to Soon Debut New On-Street Parking Meters
On-street parking meters, pay stations & hourly rates begin February 27

DURHAM, N.C. - Beginning February 27, finding on-street parking in Durham's bustling downtown will be easier thanks to the installation of the City of Durham's new on-street parking meters.

The City's Transportation Department is beginning the new metered on-street parking<http://www.parkdurham.org/On-Street-Metered-Parking> on Monday, February 27, which features new parking meters for approximately 1,000 spaces located throughout the downtown area. The installation of the new parking meters and signage will begin this week in preparation for the February 27 launch date.

The new on-street parking will use a combination of single-space parking meters<http://www.parkdurham.org/Single-Space-Parking-Meter-Use-Instructions> and multi-space pay stations<http://www.parkdurham.org/On-Street-Metered-Parking/Multi-Space-Parking-Meter-Instructions>, which will accept credit and debit card payments, cash and coin payments, and be compatible with Passport's pay-by-phone app<http://www.parkdurham.org/On-Street-Metered-Parking/Pay-By-Phone>. The on-street hourly parking rate will be $1.50 per hour, and many spaces will have a time limit enforced during peak usage hours to encourage faster turnover.

According to Parking Management Division Administrator Thomas Leathers<mailto:Thomas.Leathers at Durhamnc.gov> with the City's Transportation Department, the new on-street parking meters were a recommendation in the Comprehensive Parking Study<http://durhamnc.gov/DocumentCenter/Home/View/3513> to encourage the much-need turnover of vehicles to meet rapidly growing demand. "If you've been downtown lately, you've seen just how busy it is and how scarce our on-street parking has become," Leathers said. "Through the implementation of this new metered parking, we're going to provide more access to downtown parking with the added convenience of having multiple ways to pay."

To help educate parkers on how to use the single-space parking meters and multi-space pay stations, the ParkDurham website<http://www.parkdurham.org/> features a variety of "how-to" videos as well as a downloadable parking guide and street map<http://www.parkdurham.org/On-Street-Metered-Parking>.

According to Leathers, the on-street metered parking isn't the only option for residents and visitors. "Through our off-street parking options<http://www.parkdurham.org/Off-Street-Parking>, we offer four centrally located parking garages and three surface parking lots with the same easy-to-use payment system and an affordable $1.25 hourly rate," Leathers said. "While the rate in our garages and surface lots will increase by 25 cents to $1.25 per hour beginning February 27, there are no time constraints on these parking spaces, so this is a great option if you're going to be downtown for a considerable amount of time."

Downtown visitors are also encouraged to use the Bull City Connector<http://godurhamtransit.org/bcc>, which provides fare-free service from Duke University to Golden Belt including Ninth Street and downtown Durham.

In addition to new on-street metered parking, special event parking<http://www.parkdurham.org/Off-Street-Parking/Special-Event-Parking-Schedule> in the City's parking garages will increase from $3 to $5 per hour effective February 27. This increase is needed to offset the costs associated with providing maintenance and a security presence in the parking facilities.

According to Leathers, the funds collected through on-street and off-street parking will be funneled back into Durham's parking system for ongoing maintenance as well as to support future parking improvements.

For more information, including how-to videos, parking guide, downtown parking map and instructions on how to download and use the pay-by-phone app, visit the ParkDurham website<http://www.parkdurham.org/> or watch the latest episode of CityLife<https://youtu.be/R5_TmXLlmXE>, which features in-depth details on Durham's new on-street metered parking.
