Durham Tax Administrator Reminds Citizens of 2017 Appeal Deadline

DURHAM, NC- Tax Administrator Kimberly Simpson wants to remind property owners that this year’s deadline to appeal real property tax values will be April 17, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. “That is the date and time that the Durham County Board of Equalization and Review officially adjourns for the year, and state statutes remove the Board’s authority to consider appeals filed after the adjournment.” says Ms. Simpson.

The Board of Equalization and Review has statutory duties and powers that permit it to hear timely-filed appeals concerning the valuation or taxability of property. Appeals that are filed after the deadline will be automatically considered for the 2018 tax year.

For real property value appeals, the Board must always consider what the value of the property would have been on the date of the last countywide reappraisal. Since Durham County’s last reappraisal took effect on January 1, 2016, that becomes the valuation date for all real property in the county until the next reappraisal, which is currently scheduled for January 1, 2019. Ms. Simpson says, “Until 2019, remember that the question for value appeals will always be, ‘What would my property have been worth on January 1, 2016?’”

Citizens are encouraged to contact the Durham County tax office at 919-560-0300 to speak with a representative for questions or further information.
