So far 2839 folks have voted. Out of about 180,000 registered in the city. Based on the energy put into signs and campaigners, there are a couple races where there is a real contest to get to be on the ballot in November, so your vote matters. Remember that the 2008 Senate race in Minnesota was decided by 225 votes out of a couple million cast.

The campaigners start folding their tents about 1/2 an hour before closing so it easier to sneak through at the end of the day.

The hours are:

Saturday, September 30, 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Sunday, October 1, 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Monday, October 2 - Friday, October 6, 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Saturday, October 7, 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

You can apply to get a ballot by mail. The BOE must receive your request by 5 PM on October 2nd (the website amazingly does not give this information), but otherwise, information on ballot by mail is at http://www.dconc.gov/government/departments-a-e/board-of-elections/voting-registration/voting/ballot-by-mail

A grand total of 1157 people have voted so far (so if you were worried about lines, quit worrying and get out to vote!). As of May, there were 177,822 registered voters in the city of Durham, so we aren't even up to 1% voting.

Today has more Sunday hours than next week. (See below for complete hours)

Note that polls are only open to 6 PM on week days, and until 1PM on Saturdays.

Everyone in the city votes for candidates from all three wards. The candidates from Ward 1 have to live in Ward 1 so they know the issues there, for example, but they make decisions for the whole city so have to represent both their ward and the whole city. Here is a sample ballot: http://www.dconc.gov/home/showdocument?id=21522

I personally would wait until Monday when the kinks are worked out of the system, but if you are gung-ho and all, the sites are Board of Elections downtown, NCCU, North and South Library. The hours are the same at all sites:

Sunday, September 24 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Monday, September 25 - Friday, September 29 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Saturday, September 30 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Sunday, October 11 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Monday, October 2 - Friday, October 6 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Saturday, October 7 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

For some reason, I can't find the schedule on the Durham BOE website, but it is here: https://vt.ncsbe.gov/ossite/ (you need to page forward to get to the South Library listing)

You can also get a ballot by mail:

If you just need to update your registration within Durham County, you don't need ID. You may need ID if:

  * For some first-time voters, if for some reason something messed up with the registration form you sent in
  * You are moving your registration from outside Durham County, you will need one of the acceptable documents that may be used to provide proof of residency include: a North Carolina driver license, a photo ID from a government agency, a copy of one of the following that shows the name and address of the voter: a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck or other government document.
