County to Update Security Measures at Human Services Building
Security Updates Include Installation of Metal Detectors

Durham, NC - Effective April 16, 2018, new security updates will be implemented at the Durham County Human Services Building located at 414 E. Main Street. The new screening measures will include the requirement for individuals using the main entrance of the building, facing Main Street, to pass through a metal detector and undergo a search of any hand-carried items (i.e. backpacks, handbags, brief cases, purses, etc.). A lane meeting the Americans with Disabilities Act will be accessible for those with physical disabilities.

"Ensuring the safety of our employees and customers is important to Durham County government," said Security Manager Ed Miller. "These security measures will help minimize prohibited items, such as firearms and edged weapons from being brought into the facility."

Anyone planning to visit the Durham County Human Services Building should be aware of upcoming security changes and understand what steps will be taken if prohibited items are detected at the security check point.

According to Miller, "any type of firearm or firearm replica, including BB and pellet guns, knives of any type or size, illicit drugs, martial arts weapons, such as throwing stars/darts or nunchakus, knitting needles, or similar devices that could be used as a weapon are prohibited."

Stunning devices, such as Tasers, explosives, chemicals such as Mace, and any other substances that may be considered hazardous are also prohibited. Onsite security reserves the right to determine if an item may be brought into the facility. Visitors carrying barred items will be asked to leave the facility and return when they no longer have possession of the forbidden paraphernalia. Illicit drugs, firearms in the care of someone without a valid permit, and explosives will be confiscated at the security check point.

Law enforcement officers with valid credentials are exempt from the screening process. Emergency response personnel responding to an event will be permitted to bypass screening as well.

Human Services Building visitors are advised to allot extra time to complete the screening process prior to their appointments. Questions about this security update should be directed to Miller at emiller at dconc.gov<mailto:emiller at dconc.gov>.
