Durham Hosts Public Input Meeting on Broad Street Striping Plans

Drop-In Style Meeting & Online Survey to Collect Resident Input

DURHAM, N.C. - If you live, work, or travel along Broad Street in Durham, you’ll want to mark your calendar for a meeting next week to review the proposed striping design plans<http://durhamnc.gov/3670/Broad-Street> that will add bicycle lanes to help make this local thoroughfare safer for all roadway users.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation is preparing to resurface Broad Street between West Main Street and Guess Road, and the City of Durham Transportation Department has developed several proposed striping plans<http://durhamnc.gov/3670/Broad-Street> that will add bicycle facilities when the road is resurfaced. Broad Street is a local thoroughfare that provides connections between Duke University’s East Campus to the south, North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics to the north, and commercial and residential destinations throughout the corridor.

Approximately 13,000 motor vehicles travel through the corridor daily, along with bicyclists and pedestrians. For bicyclists, the corridor is a key connection between bicycle facilities on Broad Street north of Guess Road and bicycle facilities on West Club Boulevard and West Main Street. The planned improvements to this street are intended to improve the safety for all users by making it a more ‘complete street.’ Complete Streets are designed for people of all ages and abilities to feel comfortable walking, biking, driving, or using transit. Within Broad Street’s existing 44-foot cross section, there is an opportunity to reallocate space to improve access along the corridor for all users.

The drop-in style public meeting is set for Monday, June 18 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at E.K. Powe Elementary School<https://www.dpsnc.net/EK-Powe>, located at 913 9th Street, Durham. Residents will be able to review the proposed final striping design, ask questions of Transportation staff, and provide additional input on the plan.

For residents who can’t attend the June 18 meeting, the final proposed design and an online survey to collect feedback will be available on the project website<http://durhamnc.gov/3670/Broad-Street> beginning Monday, June 18. The deadline to receive comments is June 30. This Broad Street Striping meeting will also take place at the same time and location as the Hillandale Road Bike and Pedestrian Facilities meeting<http://durhamnc.gov/DocumentCenter/View/21850/Durham-Moves-Hillandale-Road-Bike-and-Pedestrian-Facilities-Meeting-to-New-Location>, allowing residents the opportunity to provide input on both of these bicycle and pedestrian projects.

This project is part of the City’s effort to improve biking and walking throughout Durham. In May 2017, the City Council adopted the Durham Bike+Walk Implementation Plan<http://durhamnc.gov/3092/BikeWalk-Plan-2017>, which provides recommendations for bicycle and pedestrian facilities to improve safety, connectivity, and quality of life throughout Durham. In this planning process, Broad Street was identified as part of the priority bicycle network.
