Durham Debuts Free Textile Recycling Drop-Off Location

DURHAM, N.C. - City of Durham residents looking for an easy and free way to recycle their clothing, shoes, and other household textiles can now take advantage of a free designated drop-off location.

The City's Solid Waste Management Department is partnering with Durham-based Green Zone<http://www.greenzonenc.com/> as their new service provider for the collection, transportation, and recycling of clothing, shoes, other textiles, and small household items. Residents can now bring their clothing and other textiles for free drop off at the City's Waste Disposal and Recycling Center<https://durhamnc.gov/878/Waste-Disposal-Recycling-Center>, located at 2115 E. Club Blvd., Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon.

According to Director Donald Long with the City's Solid Waste Management Department, this new service is aimed at removing clothing, shoes, and other textiles from Durham's waste stream by diverting these recyclable products to be redistributed to the nation's secondhand market, sent to countries in need as microenterprise commodities, or processed into reusable green-end products.

"This new program is a win-win for us, because not only are we diverting these items from the waste stream by providing a free drop-off location, but this service is being provided by Green Zone at no cost to the City," Long said. "If our residents will use this drop-off location, they are not only helping our environment and supporting our economy, but they are also saving their tax dollars from being used to pay for tipping fees and the hauling costs of these recyclable products to the landfill."

Items that can be recycled at this new drop-off location should be dry and clean, and can be left in less-than-perfect condition (worn, torn or stained):
