LIBBY MCCLURE · AUG 12, 2022 ·

DataWorks NC is one of 5 organizations participating in the Data Equity
Coalition Project. The main purpose of this project is to influence the
national dialogue on racism and health, centering the concerns of Durham’s
communities of color, low income, and historical disinvestment. Working
closely with community partners, DataWorks aims to identify meaningful
questions about racism to include in two national, CDC survey efforts:

Behavioral Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS)
Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS)
Project Activities:

Focus groups and community conversations to develop potential survey
questions.

These activities will inform the best ways to collect data that reflects
the experiences of Durham’s residents. We plan to center systemic and
structural racism in these discussions, to move the dialogue away from
typical public health research focused on individuals’ biology and
behaviors. Based on community conversations and organizing over the past
several years, DataWorks plans to collect data on housing and
displacement–major manifestations of structural racism in Durham.

DataWorks will host community events following these conversations to share
and discuss results.

Who Should Participate:

Durham residents who are interested in sharing their perspectives on
racism, housing, and health inequalities.
