The heat dome in the Pacific Northwest, which killed almost 1,000 people in 2021, was a warning. The communities most affected are often those facing structural racism. Compared to Whites, many more Native American, Latino, Asian, and Black adults say their households have faced serious health problems due to extreme weather conditions. A professor specializing in climate change adaptation offers solutions that place historically marginalized communities at the center of designing climate adaptation strategies. Updated housing codes and better access to green infrastructure are among the investments that can protect people as temperatures rise.
