The Ohio Chapter, American Academy of Pediatrics (Ohio AAP) would like to alert its members of a new code that must be used in the new year for screening for maternal depression. These changes took effect on January 1, 2017.

Code 99420 has been deleted. This had been used for screening a child’s mother for depression under the child’s name.

NEW CODE: 96161 – This code is the administration of caregiver-focused health risk assessment instrument (eg, depression inventory) for the benefit of the patient, with scoring and documentation, per standardized instrument.

An additional new code, 96160, is to be used for administration of patient-focused health risk assessment instrument (eg, health hazard appraisal) with scoring and documentation, per standardized instrument.

The Ohio AAP has updated its handout, “Maternal Depression Recommendations,” and you my download it by clicking here<http://ohioaap.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/MaternalDepressionHandout_2017Update.pdf>.

In 2015, Ohio became just the sixth state in the U.S. to cover maternal depression screenings at pediatric preventative care visits through Medicaid. The Ohio AAP is grateful for Ohio Medicaid’s work in protecting children by covering these codes.
